Company Overview
Avantos AI is shaping the future of client relationship management by reimagining it through the lens of artificial intelligence. We are building the industry’s first AI-native operating system for financial services, transforming how firms onboard clients, deliver advice, and manage critical servicing workflows. Our platform consolidates fragmented data, automates complex processes, and embeds intelligent decision-making throughout every stage of the client lifecycle.
Supported by Bessemer Venture Partners and MIT’s investment arm, our team comprises execution-focused, design-driven, product-centric founders and leaders from Wharton, MIT, top design programs, and unicorn SaaS companies. We move swiftly, tackle deep industry challenges, and build technology that empowers users to take charge of their workflows.
About the Role
An Avantos journey is a real program: a graph of nodes, typed forms, a state machine, sandboxed JavaScript, and outbound calls to custodians and vendors. We build them as workflow bundles — typed TypeScript definitions that live in Git next to their unit tests, typechecked as one artifact, and deployed to each customer environment by an idempotent CLI.
We are looking for a Lead Software Engineer to serve as the technical player-coach of our Full Stack Workflows team. You will lead a team of full-stack engineers building production financial journeys while staying actively hands-on in code, architecture, and the release pipeline.
You are a seasoned engineer who brings high technical credibility and proven leadership instincts. You do not view leadership as pure management; instead, you balance hands-on individual contribution — writing journey code, reviewing PRs, debugging failing production runs — with operational leadership across sprint planning, task assignment, workload distribution, and mentoring.
How This Role Fits
Our Platform team owns the execution engine, the form runtime, and the deployment CLI. You own the bundles and the team that writes them. In practice that makes you the platform’s most demanding customer: you set the standard journey code is held to, and you push authoring pain back as concrete platform requirements rather than working around it. Engineers who want to contribute directly to the engine can, and you should be able to review that work — but building the engine is not this team’s mandate.
Responsibilities
– Lead as a Player-Coach: Drive sprint planning, assign work, balance load, and unblock the team daily while maintaining real hands-on output on real journeys.
– Set the Standard for Journey Code: Define what a bundle must satisfy before it ships: review rigor, test coverage that means something for second-order code, naming and structure, release notes, and a breaking-change policy.
– Own the Shared Library: Govern reusable forms, sections, and functions — published, version-pinned, and upgraded deliberately when a change fans out across many forms and multiple tenants.
– Own Promotion & Rollback: Make releases across Dev, Staging, UAT, and Production atomic and reversible, with per-environment secrets and service configuration kept outside Git and a rollback path that has actually been exercised.
– Align Product & Clients: Partner directly with product leaders, operations, compliance, and client-facing teams to translate messy real-world requirements into clean, scalable technical architectures — and to say plainly when a request should be pushed back on.
– Multiply the Team: Mentor mid-level and senior engineers, enforce rigorous code review, and raise the ceiling on both velocity and execution quality.
– Own Operational Stability: Oversee journey execution reliability, trace failing production runs, drive down mean time to diagnosis, and make sure each incident leaves behind a test.
Minimum Qualifications
– Experience Level: Roughly 8+ years of software engineering experience building scalable, data-intensive web applications, including 2+ years leading engineers while remaining an active individual contributor.
– Technical Leadership: Proven experience running sprints, allocating work, mentoring engineers, and setting technical direction without stepping out of the code.
– Full-Stack Technical Depth: Expertise in modern React and TypeScript, including authoring TSX components against a constrained runtime, plus solid backend competency. Golang preferred, or a strong systems language such as Java, C#, or Rust with rapid Go adaptability — enough to read the engine, review platform pull requests, and debug across the boundary.
– API & Data Fundamentals: Deep understanding of REST/HTTP standards, API design, JSON Schema and zod-style validation, asynchronous and event-driven execution, and how to decompose a system into services.
– Engineering Rigor: Unit and integration testing, snapshot or contract testing of external calls, disciplined version control, config-as-code deployment with plan/apply and rollback semantics, and documentation you would want to inherit.
– Product & Client Mindset: Strong product instincts and excellent English communication skills. Comfortable interfacing with non-technical business stakeholders, clarifying ambiguous requirements, and explaining technical trade-offs.
– Overlap: Roughly four hours of daily overlap with US Eastern time.
Preferred Qualifications
– You have designed a config-as-code format, DSL, or SDK that other engineers authored against — including its versioning and migration story.
– Direct production experience with both React and Golang.
– Background in fintech, wealth management, or orchestration engines (e.g. Temporal, Camunda).
– Experience designing reusable frontend design systems, internal CLI tooling, or workflow engines.
– Hands-on experience with relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL) and event-driven architecture — change data capture, queues, and consumers.
How We Work
– You Shape the Platform Your Team Authors On: The bundle format, the CLI, and the test harness evolve alongside the journeys they serve, and this team has unusual influence over what they become.
– On-Call: The team holds business-hours responsibility for the journeys it ships; a dedicated production support team owns first response.
